Botox Injection for TMJ Pain

BOTOX® is used to treat Facial and TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) and associated jaw tension and pain. When injected into specific facial muscles affected with soreness and discomfort, BOTOX® relieves TMJ and jaw tension for many patients. The injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding, and in cases of severe stress, BOTOX® can even minimize lockjaw.

Here are some of the most common questions our patients ask about Botox treatment:

How do I know if I am a candidate for TMJ Botox Treatment!

The simple answer is to have a consultation with our Rancho Santa Margarita, California TMJ surgeon and TMJ specialist Dr. Bolourian. There are many causes of TMJ facial pain and Botox is not the answer to all TMJ issues. In general myofascial pain or pain originating from the muscles and tendons surrounding TMJ respond well to Botox treatment.

BOTOX® functions by weakening muscles that it is injected into. Only the areas or muscles injected with Botulinum Toxin will be “relaxed.” Botulinum Toxin treatment for TMJ therapy will not affect anywhere else in your body. The injections are mainly in the masseter and temporalis muscles (see picture).

How long does it take to perform the procedure?

Botox injection should take no longer than 15-30 minutes. Again the idea is to diagnose the condition correctly. Botox injection is a simple, fast and effective procedure for the right individual with correct diagnosis.

What is the recovery time after Botox injection for TMJ?

Recovery for Botox is minimal. This is a non-invasive procedure and you are able to go back to your normal life soon after the procedure. There is minimal to no swelling, bruising or pain associated with this procedure.

Are there any side effects to Botox when used for TMJ treatment?

There are very few contraindication to Botox injection. People with some nerve or muscle disorders may not be candidates for Botox injections. Dr. Bolourian will carefully review your medical history prior to offering botulinum toxin injection to relieve TMJ pain.

Does the treatment change the shape of my face?

A common question we are asked is if Botox injections for the purpose of TMJ treatment will change ones appearance. The answer is NO! Botox when injected to muscles related to your TMJ, will not alter the shape of your face. Of importance is the dosage of Botox used. If high doses are used, it may slim the jaw line.

How much does Botox injection cost for TMJ treatment?

Dr. Bolourian carefully evaluates the facial muscles to determine the appropriate dosage of therapeutic (botulinum toxin) Botox to be used to gain the maximum benefits for our patients. The typical cost for botox injection session to treat myofascial pain related to TMJ is $650-$850.

How long does the effect of Botox last?

The therapeutic effects of Botox may last up to 6 months after injection. Although it varies in every individual. One important fact about botulinum toxin (Botox) is that it eventually trains the muscles to function at a lower strength and perhaps elevate the pain permanently.
